An evergreen glabrous shrub up to 2m tall, found in forests of sub-tropical and temperate zones.
Taxonomic Features
Leaves simple, entire, narrow to broadly lanceolate or narrowly ovate, acute, shiny, upper surface dark green, lower surface whitish green. Inflorescence a raceme, either male or female or mixed, with male flower towards apex and female towards base. Male raceme 6.8 mm long while female 1 cm long. Flower sessile, greenish white, unisexual, bract ovate. Sepals elliptic to broadly elliptic. Fruit a drupe, sub globose, purple, smooth.

Medicinal Value
According to our investigations at Boys PGC College Abbaspur, a powder from its root bark has been prepared and found to be a useful remedy for patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. It has antifungal and antiviral properties. More than 200 patients have been treated suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. One gram to half gram dose is recommended. Locally the aqueous extract is used as antipyretic and anti-inflammatory agent.
